Week Three

Hello everyone, well I began the week with a broken tooth/filling! I wasn't even eating anything hard oh dear, hopefully I am not falling to bits.  I managed to get in the dentist  Wednesday so that is all fixed, she was able to just redo the side of it without any need for numbing, I think that is always the worst bit so at least I was spared that. So possibly I will be eating very carefully around that tooth now for ever more, or at least until I forget.

I have been watching some lovely videos on youtube at The last Homely House if you have never seen any of these go and have a look she makes the most amazing quilts and does all kinds of crafting plus she is a lovely lady to listen to and chats about all sorts, like listening to a friend.

Tuesday I thought I had discovered the best ever GF Wraps and had two for lunch, only to find I had the most horrendous stomach ache for the rest of the day and all night.  After looking at the packet I noticed Xanthan gum!  Well that will teach me not to look, I had to throw this away when I had some as it plays havoc with me and unfortunatley most Gf recipes for bread have it listed.  That is why I bought some a few years ago but I soon got rid of it, it is tricky though as they sneak it in all sorts,  that and certain preservatives or artificial sweeteners they are another trigger, I know I think I just wont eat!  Bananas are good I'm ok with those 😀

Keeping up with the list making but I have noticed one thing I had one item that got moved three days running! Perhaps because I do put rarher a lot on these lists and also because I sometimes underestimate just how long things take. So my soloution to this is the item has gone to the top of todays list and it is the first thing I am doing this morning.

Yesterday I made a bag that I am not sure I can part with, well I have listed it in my Etsy shop however I keep looking at it, it is so colourful and the flower turned out so well.  Some of my gifted  recycled fabric here, plus lots of odd bits.  This was one of the jobs I mean where I allocated time then it took twice as long, mainly because I was experimenting with the fabrics and colours then putting it all together.

I do a number of layers of fabric between the lining and the outer fabric so they are very stable, all recycled and a zip on this one also recycled.

Today on the list is to take some declutter to the charity shop, I have a confession to make I did buy three books last week from the charity shop, so this may sound like it is defeating the object of decluttering. However I am looking at it like this I am making sure  more goes out than comes in so that way I stay on top and I don't buy books every week it is just if I see them plus it supports the charity shop too.

Here are the ones I picked up...

The one on the end is by the same author as The Mercies which I have just read and really enjoyed so I thought I would give that a go. The middle one was up on a shelf and just caught my eye, The travelling Cat Chronicles just looked a bit different. Waterstones eat your heart out ha ha.

Well I am off now to get on with todays list, have a lovely weekend where ever you are.

Art Gallery Fabrics Pyjamas

Hello, I hope you are all well I am having a lovely weekend because now term has ended for the summer hooray!  I have been sewing and filming, we had a potter in the charity shops on Friday but I have to say I am finding the heat way too much at the moment as I am still struggling with my chest after being ill.  Everything seems to take it out of me at the moment so hopefully I will be fully fit really soon.  I don't want it dragging on through the summer.

Here is my make for minerva, some super comfy pyjamas in cotton jersey, I have had them on already and they really are lovely and soft.  The pattern is kwick sew K3382 and the pattern does state woven for the bottoms but I made it all in the same fabric and it worked out well.

I thought I would make a few practical things, so these fit the bill.

On Friday when we were out I got a few bargains from the £1 rail in the charity shop, these are for refashioning I have already made the shirt into a blouse and that can be seen on my YouTube channel

I am trying to do mainly refashioning on there and also showing how sewing can be done on the cheap, the thing is I hope the ideas keep on coming.  I tend to refashion my own clothes when I get fed up of them too so it won't always be stuff from charity shops.  I like to make sure the fabrics keep evolving into something else while ever they are still holding up.

Also from the charity shop I found a lovely little teacup and saucer, I don't drink from a cup and saucer but it was just too pretty to pass up.  It is currently in my sewing room and I think I may try and recreate the design on to something, not sure what yet.

The books in the background were also bought for 65p each, a bit of summer reading I think one of them is a YA book but I don't mind that now and again.

Well I hope you all have a good week and a re able to make the most of the weather. Take care.

Sunny Days

Hello, I hope you are all enjoying the sunshine if you are here in the UK it has been a long time coming and to everyone everywhere I hope you are all having a good week.  We have been making the most of it here in Sheffield and I am reluctant to do anything in doors for fear of missing a bit of the sunshine!  I am currently typing this next to the back door so I can  see the screen with the door open, yes I love the sunshine.  We have had a few meals outside and I am just generally enjoying the garden.

These Alliums are finally opening and looking beautiful, I have taken quite a few pictures of these I have to say.

Just be prepared for a few garden pics first of all or skim down if you are not interested in the garden, as soon as it is nice out I have to take a few every year to see how things are looking.

There are such a lot of things on the brink of opening so I will be sure to take more over the coming weeks, currently there is a lot of green, and I know I foolishly pulled out a lot of my seedling the other week when tidying.  Note to future self wait for thing to open and weed out later!

We have moved this seat a lot further back as it was in front of that tree before, it has created the look of more space.  Our garden goes to a sort of point at that top end so we thought this was a good idea.  There are also conifers all the way down that left side while providing privacy they also intrude into the garden by quite a way.  We are thinking of just trimming the bottom branches off like we have at the top on that big one, that way I can plant down that side with woodland plants, has anyone else done this and if so what are your thoughts?  It would certainly give us more space on that side, I keep the center area as slate due to the dogs, the grass used to look lovely but they churned it up and spoilt it.

On Sunday we had a lovely bike ride out to Wentworth it is always very scenic out that way and also a decent ride from our house.

Monday we had a lovely walk around Dam Flask first thing before all the people got there, we like to that as it can get very busy especially on weekends and bank holidays.  There is something very special about arriving while it is still quiet and peaceful.

I have been tinkering with a new top, I used the same pattern as last week from the mia set but this time I have hacked it.  I have altered the sleeve, the shoulders (they stood a little proud) made it a bit narrower and I am going to do a tie at the bottom front too but I haven't added that yet.  I started it yesterday morning but then had a day of visiting people so it got left.  I will post an image of the finished blouse on in a few days, here is the work so far...

Here it has one side pinned just to check the sleeve, I got his far then my mum called and I went over to her house for a visit.  Can you see my mannequin has tape around the neck?  The neck sort of exploded a few weeks ago and a spring came out, it won't go back in properly so it is tape for the time being.  I will probably put ribbon around it as I don't need the neck to go wider it is quite big to begin with.

I have started one of my new books from the charity shop 'Tidelands' it is interesting so far...

Also found a place for the two pictures I got from the charity shop, one is in my sewing room and the other is on the wall just outside, they were £3.50 and I am very happy with them.

Well that is all for today, have a lovely week.

A New Year of Sewing and a Vintage Dress

Happy new year to you all, I hope you all got to celebrate in some way with your nearest families. For us it was an evening watching Vikings then off to bed before midnight with the youngest of the dogs going with us as the fireworks drive him crazy!  This has become worse as I am sure the fireworks keep getting louder, he never used to bother a few years ago, so taking him up with us for comfort was the best option.

My afternoon was spent making a vintage style dress for my son's girlfriend out of the Burda vintage anniversary edition.  It was not an easy make, it kept referring to markings that could not be seen on the pieces as the pattern sheet was so busy and despite straining my eyes I am certain they are not there!  Usually this is not a problem as I try on and sort things my way but as it is not for me and she is not here I could not do this. Also the fabric was so slinky it reminded me of the microfibre we used to use when I used to make sportwear for a company, it slides al over the place so lots of cursing ;)  I eventually got it made up and it is hanging on my mannequin but not before having to completely redo a front facing as the interfacing was showing through.  Yes not the most relaxing make, I really need her to try it now so I can finish it properly but to be honest I want to see the back of it, have you ever made anything like that? It really was such a contrast to the lovely relaxing day of sewing I had  making the hare dress a few days ago.  It just goes to show not all projects are equal and I would imagine if you were just starting out that could be the kind of thing to put you right off.

So here it needs adjusting at the waist but we are different sizes so I need her to try it so I can do this properly.
She also didn't want the overskirt so it is just the image on the right but in the deep red fabric.

So if you are out there and your new year resolution is to start making your own clothes do not be put off if you have an experience like this.  It just happens sometimes so just move on and make something else, I have been sewing years and this was just a combination of bad pattern markings, making for someone not here to fit to and the fabric.  So I will just accept this and move on, the plus side is that it looks nice, I have actually made the shoulder gathers into little pleats as I thought they looked neater.

Do you have any special plans for 2021? Our main one was to get in ten trips away in the new van, alas we have had it moths now and not been able to, we actually lost the deposit on the last site we booked but not  to be deterred as soon as we can travel anywhere we will be off for a weekend.  My husband was busy yesterday rubbing down a table  we bought for it second hand, it did come with a very heavy one but we wanted a light weight one we can take down easily and store in the awning when not in use so we are revamping this one.  We have even bought a glitzy topper to glue to the top as this table is a bit beige and boring.  My husband even went and sat in the van for a bit yesterday, he is keen to get using it.

I have bought myself a book on coding, it is aimed at children but I find books aimed at children to be very clear and I have to say that this is definitely a new area for me so this is just what I need.  It had lots of good reviews from adults in the same position who had bought it for themselves so hopefully it will be useful.  So that is something I want to learn a little bit about this year.

One thing I am going to use less of this year is Facebook, I thought I never used to check it very much but I think this has increased and this is not a good thing.  Quite often it is a big time waster and my main reason for it was that sometimes people I don't see much of anymore might get in touch and need some sewing doing so they would message me that way.  This may only happen a couple of times a year so going it for twenty minutes a day is not necessary is it?? Yes I think it may be that long sometimes as I fall down the rabbit hole of reading everyone's posts, so that has to stop and I will do something more productive with that time.

A trip to the charity shop last week resulted in a couple of new books a few for mum, one for my husband and this one for me...

I have never read this though I know it was made into a film and I haven't seen that either so it is all new to me and a bargain at 99p!

Well enjoy your new start to the year everyone and here's to a good one.

Burda Top from Maxi Dress Refashion

I have had a fun day of sewing today, I got the shopping done first thing and with that out of the way I could get on with my refashion.  This is my first pattern to try out from the Burda June issue and I thought I would try it out by refashioning a thrifted maxi dress that I bought for £1 some time ago.  The dress is a size 16 so I had an idea I would be able to cut out the top pieces from further down the dress where there is more fabric.  It only just did it as I wanted to save the bottom border for the frill.

It has taken me quite a bit of time mainly because of the frill as I had to join the pieces together that matched, the ones you can see in the image with the little petal shapes. After a number of joins I then chose to edge the frill with a fine zig zag on a small stitch as I didn't want a turned under hem because I thought that would look too bulky.  So as you can already guess I started following the instructions then did things that I thought would work better like this hem.  One thing that did annoy me was that I could not find pieces a, b or c for this pattern on the sheet!  As it is just the frill and belt I could guess at the width and length and do my own thing but if you were new to sewing  this may  prove tricky, maybe it is just my eyesight, there is a lot on those sheets.

One thing I did manage to salvage from the original dress was the tie belt, I just cut that in half and made the ties for the back. That was the only quick job as the rest I made from scratch, this was not your usual chop the bottom off refashion but rather chop it all up and start again.

After cutting the pieces out of baking paper I had a bit of jiggling to get the facings out of the fabric so they did not lay straight on my scrap pieces but rather at an angle, this has not affected the finish of the top though.

There was surprisingly little fabric left after I had finished probably because the top of the original dress just had spaghetti straps so not a lot of fabric at the top and then of course that deep border.

When I bought this dress for the fabric I had no idea what I would use it for but it just shows if you wait the right project will come along.

When I had trimmed these pieces down for the frill I used the in between pieces to make the binding for the arm holes.

This just gives it a bit of interest on the inside too so I am very happy with that little detail.

I am happy with the fit so now I know that the sizing for the patterns in the magazine are accurate I will be able to confidently make more items without worrying that they are poorly sized.  I never make mock ups before I sew I usually just jump straight in.

Now we just need the sun to return so that I can actually wear this, here is the original top from the magazine and it looks much warmer where she is...

As you can see I chose to make my frill much narrower than this as I felt it would look better on me.

Well week one of June and that is one project complete from the magazine, if my fabric doesn't come in the next few days I may have to hunt around the house for something else to refashion!  There is a charity shop mans shirt that I bought, not sure what to do with that??

Well bye for now and enjoy what is left of the weekend.

A Charity Shop Bargain and a Few Makes

We haven't been very far this last few weeks it is that sort of weather that keeps you close to home, walks with the dogs and local but that has been about it.  I am looking forward to spring days but realise that is a way off yet!

Last week we had a look in the local charity shop St Lukes, and I found a pair of men's Levi jeans that are an excellent colour.  They are size 30 waist and 32 leg, my husband said they were nice but the leg was way too narrow for him but at £3.00 they were too good to miss.  I decided to buy them and size them down for myself.  It can be quite tricky to size down jeans due to all the bulk but I went slowly, walked the foot over the really thick parts and hand stitched the back belt loop back on.  There really was no way my domestic  Toyota machine was going over that many layers of denim despite it being the model suitable for denim and heavy weight! ( I sometimes wonder about that description)

Here they are with the sides and back unpicked, I then took a chunk in the shape of  a triangle out of each area.  I tried them first then guessed it but if you have not done this before you should pin, measure how much needs to come out but allow for your seams.  I have done this before so I am quite ok at guessing by just pinching here and there.   I am a size 8 ladies and only 5ft 4 so I also had to take them up a little.

They are low slung so only sit above the hips, I took them in right under to the crotch so they would fit correctly on the bottom.

I am really pleased with them, repurposed for me, it has saved me buying a new pair in future and I enjoyed the process, win, win.   I also found some more 'like new' children's  books that I use for prizes for some of the children I  work with, I like that if we look after things and pass them on they can be enjoyed again and again.  Just today I gave out Hansel and Gretel  as a prize and as we have been reading a version of this only this week the recipient looked very pleased.

Earlier this week I finished  a sweater top which is a Minerva make, I just need to do the write up for that and take some photographs of me in it.  The problem I am having at this time of year as ever is getting good daylight shots as when I get home it is dark, so I am waiting for the weekend and hoping for good light.

This is a bit far away from my usual fitted styles but I thought  I would try something new,   The sleeves are really wide so I will have to see how I get on wearing it day to day as it may be bulky under coats, we will see.    There will be a full write up and pattern details on Minerva at some time in the future.  I am wearing it tomorrow so I will have a better idea of wearability, it will be warm because it is a thick jersey.

At the moment I am toying with the idea of making a matching little tube skirt as there is a piece left and it may just do it.  If I go with it I will share next week.

There were quite a few books returned to the library this week along with 'Melmoth' and I really enjoyed that, so much so that I picked up  'After Me Comes the Flood also by Sarah Perry,   after enjoying the Essex Serpent too I thought I  would give this one a try.  I also ordered Stretch by Tilly Walnes as I have been watching a vlog where she made the whole book in a month (six patterns) I am not sure I want to make all of them as one is maybe not my style but it would be fun to try a few I thought.   I am second in the wait list so it may be a few months yet until I get it.

Of course I have to share a few of my latest bags, the foxy one was a custom order for a colleague and the other just an idea I had for using up oddments.

Just this week I have found a new current favourite song, it is Phil Wickham Secret Place, I love it go on over and have a listen if you have a minute.

I'm off now have a good week and take care.

December...ing

A little earlier in the month this time but I thought I'd make an early start...

Making a winter dress, I bought this fabric a few months ago when I visited my local fabric shop with a friend.  I have only just made the dress as I wanted to save it for Christmas,  I know that when I make something new I always want to wear it straight away so I have saved this for the season.
The fabric is cosmo, it is Japanese and feels like a linen but I am not certain of that.  It is a good weight.

It is now fully complete but I do not have a daylight picture or one of me in it yet I will try to get one over the coming week. I only just had enough fabric so I used binding for the neck and just squeezed enough fabric for strips for the arm holes.   The lining is a combination of black and white lining, I stitched two pieces together to make a piece big enough as I didn't have enough of either colour.
It has a side zip, front and back darts and a couple of small shaping darts at the neckline to stop any gaping.

Here it is when I cut it out, just a few small pieces of fabric left, I
used another shift dress I made previously from my own pattern as a guide to cut around. Most of the shaping and fitting was done on the mannequin with a few tweaks when trying on.

Listening to some wonderful new music on youtube, I found this gorgeous song the other day after hearing it on UCB radio You came anyway by Ashton Lane it is a Christmas song but a little different  but if you listen to it you will hear the story.  Also Matt Kearney The Air I Breathe is another good one.

Designing more bags, I made this one yesterday and added some applique leaves, the coloured cottons are from a little solids sample pack I received with some fabric a while ago they are only about 5cm square but I have found this little use for them.

Paper crafting a card for a friend, I have not made any cards for a while but I enjoyed making this one. They can be time consuming if you make all the parts yourself and then if people just discard them after so you have to weigh up how much you enjoy the process I suppose.  The thing is with other crafts in fabric or yarn you know your efforts will last for more than a coupe of days.
I found a use for old magazines here as the balloons are fabric image pictures cut up.

Thrifting books from the charity shops, a couple for me and a few for friends. I am collecting the original Jane Austin books for myself, I gave up on the Austin project as I was finding they do not do the originals justice.  I picked up The Miniaturist  as I loved it when I borrowed it from the library.  We picked up a couple last week too when we visited but have not got any images of those to hand. I try to find the ones in the best condition.  Here are todays finds...

Eating probably too much in the way of starch, I am finding I need pasta and potatoes and gravy.  Really filling stuff at the moment, it must be the cold weather.  Today I found these gluten free, vegan friendly mince pies in Holland and Barrett.
I have tried one and they are quite nice if a little crumbly as all gluten free food generally is.

Looking at sewing magazines on youtube, yes I know this sounds a little strange but the idea was that I wanted to get a feel for a few different magazines before subscribing to one.  I was  interested in Burda and Knipmode.  I have tried in the past to get in touch with Knipmode but they never responded to my email.  I found that Saturday Night Stitch on youtube has done browse throughs on both magazines throughout the year so you can get a  feel for them that way.   This was really useful as I  now know that I do not want to subscribe to either as from what I can see a lot of the pattern styles are repeated with very little changes.  What I like is the ideas, so I will use these as a reference point then make the patterns myself just using the images for inspiration.  Go and have a look it is quite fun to look through the magazines and hear the opinions and preferences of others.

Well that is all for today, have a good week.

Charity Shop Finds and an Elephant Bag

On Saturday we  went for a walk in town and had a browse in the charity shops, I am not a fan of shopping as something to do but we were treating ourselves to lunch out and there are quite a few nice charity shops on the same street.  Whenever we are near one I will have a look and often come out without anything but there is always that chance that you will spot something you need/want and that is the fun part.  Going and buying things new the minute the impulse takes you is not great for the purse but I can appreciate if it is something you truly want and you can afford it then why not.
I love the fact that you are saving unwanted items, getting a bargain and benefitting the charity so it makes the whole process feel a lot more satisfying to me anyway.

As I often mention on this blog I get most of my books from the library but sometimes if there is a particular cook book or reference book that I know will be  read more than once I sometimes buy them.  So with that in mind I was delighted to find this Deliciously Ella book for £2.50, I would not be able to buy that cheaper on ebay as you have postage costs so that was my first bargain, it is a hardback too and looks like new.
The pretty little skirt above is from Oasis originally and I paid £1 for that from the reduced rail, it is a little big so a little bit off each side seam and it will be perfect, it is fully lined too. The glasses were £2.49 for four and I love the fruit design on the sides, finally there is the cute cake tin for £1.50.  My husband did not get why I was so thrilled with this but it was the design more than anything, I think it may stay in sewing area for non food related items ;) it is too much fun to stay in a cupboard.

I finished another little bag yesterday and I am afraid I want to keep this one, I know I will not get very far stocking up if I keep taking a fancy to them myself but it is also sad if they sit waiting to sell and I could have been enjoying them.   This was made from elephant fabric leftover from my blouse from a while back, the stripy blue and white skirt I made last year, duvet cover lining and new vinyl.  Oh and the charm is just odd bits and beads.

I am wondering if white is a good idea on a handbag but it will wash.

We have been watching a new French drama on Netflix this last week, it is called Black Spot  (Zone Blanche in French and that doesn't mean black spot but rather white zone or area so that bit of translation is a mystery).  Anyway it is a crime drama set in a small town surrounded by a forest with high levels of crime, a lot of it centring around this  forest. There is an unusual police force and the town seems to follow it's own set of rules. We are really enjoying it and I have seen other French dramas with the similar backdrop of the sinister forest, it seems to be a recurring theme in a lot of their television.

I have finished two books this last few day Small Move Big Change by Caroline Arnold and Make Your Bed by William H. Mcraven  I found the first book interesting and the second very repetitive they both cover the subject of positive habits but Make Your bed is from  a military perspective and I really don't feel that all the yelling and screaming from drill sergeants or whatever they call them is always the making of people.  In fact I wonder how many are actually broken by the whole experience, so while discipline is good and needs developing in the mind I think there  are healthy limits.  That's all for today, thank you for reading.

A Ruffle Sleeve Top from a free Pattern

I am always interested to see what everyone else is making and this week I spotted this lovely top from a free pattern.   I bought the duvet cover from a charity shop because I loved the fabric, when I saw this pattern it was the perfect.    I have had to make a few adjustments as I checked the measurements and this indicated the size I needed, I measured myself to be double sure but it came out really big so there has been some tweaking and I will explain that below.  Here is the top and I think the fabric works well.
Now in my image here there is a tie at the bottom and that is not on the original pattern ( I always have to tweak things you see!)  The original hangs away from the body and I just thought it needed drawing in a little and this was my way to do it.

With regards to the pattern I found it on the sara project blog and I love her version that is also in a white print, go and have a look at her blog if you are not familiar with it.  The free pattern is from Peppermint magazine website so you can also have a look around on there.   It is twenty eight pages of printing!  So that is why I am not always a fan of printing off patterns.  I thought I would give it a go as it is good to share these things with the community when you find them and I know a lot of people need a pattern to work from.

Sticking it all together is a job in itself but if you think of it as a jigsaw it can be a gentle activity;)
It is clear I will give it that, everything was there I know once before I printed one and there were bits missing (but not from this source).

I used the recycled duvet cover and I love using these as you get so much fabric from one, it is just a case of keeping your eyes open for one with a good print that can be worn.  I have loads of fabric left and the other side is striped.
I wonder what I can make  with the stripy side?
As I was saying it came out big size wise so it is a lovely pattern but be prepared to take it in a little. I also moved the darts up on mine and made them a little bigger, we are all different and I think dart placement is specific to each person so that is not the fault of the pattern.

When it was finished I wanted it to sit closer to the body so I cut a long strip of fabric about 4cm wide to make a tie for the bottom.  I also cut a little semi circle where the tie would sit and hemmed it.
I did that over to one side as that is where  I want it to tie.  I then folded it in half and began stitching it to the bottom allowing some to hang over each side.   Then I folded it towards the inside and stitched it down to hide the raw edges.

I find doing it this way gives a nice finish to the bottom and it removes the need for overlocking etc.
So I hope this was helpful if you fancy giving it a go but want to add something extra, I would love to see what other versions everyone can come up with.  I will leave you with one final shot of one of my dogs phot bombing earlier!

Wintering

Hello everyone, how are you all doing? Just yesterday I read a post about a book called Wintering, I have seen this book about before and t...
